These are old shots of ssao that I had implemented last year when I was making Ramblin Ambulance. The feature was not enabled in the game. At the time, it was too much of a performance drag. But with new video cards it might be more feasible. Obviously, my iPhone does not have enough juice for it. But the screenshots are interesting. Its all done with multi pass frame buffer objects and glsl.
Here is the simple scene I was working with in color. For fun, I used the orange truck in the old version of Ant Planet for the mac.

The problem here was the horizon was producing too much gray. Also, the edges were producing too much of a hard line. Fun to see the car get clipped by the near plane.

Finally, got the gray out. More subtle shades of gray. Filtered out the edges by comparing the depth. Though, slight halo on the boxes.

Tone down the halos. Maybe good enough?
